Requirements vary by university, programme, citizenship and application location. Check the notice for your exact intake before submitting.
X1 or X2
Use the official study duration, not the informal label “language year” or “semester”. A programme longer than 180 days leads to X1; one of 180 days or less to X2. The university identifies the route and prepares study documents.
Core application file
The official visa centre lists the Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 for X1; X2 uses the Admission Notice and, in some jurisdictions, an additional study form. Passport, application form, photograph and proof of legal stay may also be needed if applying outside the country of citizenship.
After entering on X1
An X1 holder must apply for a study residence permit within 30 days. The university normally completes registration and checks medical documents first. If staying outside a hotel, accommodation registration is required within 24 hours; hotels register their guests.
- Do not postpone university registration until the end of the 30-day period.
- Keep the original Admission Notice and JW form until procedures are complete.
- Check whether a new accommodation registration is needed after moving.
When to apply
Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before receiving the passport with the visa. Appointment, biometric, processing-time and fee rules vary by country, so perform the final check on the centre or embassy handling your application.
